How to Measure a Euro Cylinder Lock

The easiest and most accurate way to measure a Euro cylinder is to use a cylinder gauge, which can be purchased here. However if you do not want to use to gauge, it is still possible to measure what size cylinder you need with a tape measure or ruler:

1. When you open your door, you will see the below:

The first thing to do is to locate the retaining screw (this is the screw that is keeping your current cylinder in place.)

2. If you are using a cylinder gauge, put the centre of the cylinder gauge (B) into the retaining screw hole on your door (there is no need to remove the retaining screw):

Adjust lever (A) and (C) on the gauge to the end of your door handle.

Do not measure what the existing cylinder is at it may be the wrong size and cause the cylinder to overhang, which makes it vulnerable to burglars.

3. On side A, read off the measurement (i.e. 45mm.) On side C, read off the measurement (i.e. 35mm.) Depending on which type of cylinder you want to use, it may only fit one way round, so make a note of which side is the external side (outside.) In this example, we will say that the external side is side A.

3A. If you are using a ruler or tape measure, measure from the centre of the retaining screw to the end of your handle on side A, and repeat with side C. Always round your measurements to the nearest 5mm, so if you get a measurement of 43mm round it up to 45mm, or if the measurement is 42mm round it down to 40mm.

4. You will now have 2 measurements: Side A = 45mm and Side C = 35mm. Adding these measurements together will give you an overall measurement of 80mm.

5. If you are planning on purchasing a key/key cylinder that can only be fitted one way round (for example the UAP 3* Kinetica cylinders) then the cylinder you need is a 80mm 35/45EX cylinder (the EX shows which side is external.) However if you are puchasing a cylinder that can be fitted either way round, you can purchase either 80mm 35/45 or a 80mm 45/35 cylinder (they are both exactly the same.)

5A. If you are planning on purchasing a thumb turn cylinder, it can only be fitted one way round with the thumb turn side being on the internal side (inside.) You would therefore need a cylinder which is a 80mm 35T/45 cylinder (the T shows which side the thumb turn goes on.)

Please note - you will see the cylinder options set out as Xmm X/X (X-10-X). For example, 80mm 35/45 (30-10-40). The X-10-X measurement is just another way that some people measure cylinders (they count the cam in the middle of the cylinder as 10mm and then deduct 5mm for each side.) However you do not need to take notice of this measurement when ordering.

What are BSi 3* Kitemarked Cylinders?

The TS007:2012 BSi Kitemark is the security rating for door hardware and cylinders. The system has 3 ratings, starting at 1 and with 3 being the highest. 1 or 3 stars can be awarded to cylinders and 2 stars awarded to door hardware such as door handles or cylinder guards. For a cylinder to gain a 1 star rating is must pass the criteria set out on BS EN 1303:2005 but it does not pass snapping tests. 3 star Kitemarked cylinders pass both tests, proving to withstand 5 types of attack; drilling, picking, bumping, snapping and plug extraction. The TS007 3 star rating is the highest rating and considered the ultimate door security solution. However, installing a 3 star cylinder is not the only way to get this level of security. By installing a TS007 1 star cylinder with the backup of a TS007 2 star door hardware product you can also achieve 3 star security status.

Unlike the Patented child safe Kinetica system that means the thumb turn needs to be pushed in by the user first before it will engage and open, the Helix system offers no resistance to turning, but still maintains all of the great security features of Kinetica. This makes it easy to operate for the elderly, people with arthritis and limited hand movement. The thumb turn features a red marking in the top and an information sticker shows how it should be correctly positioned to make sure it is locked.

Inspired by the very effective safety cap on medicine bottles, this not only stops children being able to open the door locks, but also is a security feature to stop people being able to break in by putting tools through the letterbox to manipulate the thumb turn in to opening. If someone puts a strap over the thumb turn from the outside to try and turn it open, the thumb turn will just spin and therefore not engage and open.

The UAP cylinder guarantee scheme gives you and your customers the guarantee that they will never forget to maintain their lock to keep its performance to a maximum.

The cylinder comes with a key fob which includes a serial number/QR code. Customers can register the cylinder on our website to activate their guarantee. What’s more, customers will also have access to ‘My Keys.’ This allows the customer to keep a record of their key number and an image, so if they ever lost all of their keys, they can log in to the website and simply take the key number and image to a key cutter to get cut. This will save them the expense of having to replace their cylinder!

Lock snapping is one of the most common burglary methods, so to help stop this the Kinetica 3* Kitemark euro cylinders have a sacrificial cut anti snap line on them. If force is applied to the end of the cylinder in an attempt to break the cylinder to gain access, on standard cylinders, the weakest part of the cylinder is the screw hole which is in the centre of the cylinder (as there is less metal here). When force is applied, the cylinder will break away at this screw hole, making it very easy to manipulate the cylinder into opening. The cylinder will break away to the sacrificial cut anti snap line only, leaving the locking mechanism intact. If the cylinder is broken at this sacrificial cut anti snap line, the last 2 pins in the chamber remain in the cylinder, meaning that the cylinder can still be locks and unlocked with the key. If someone tries to snap the cylinder again, the cylinder is also protected by a bar which is located under the screw hole, making it extremely difficult to snap the cylinder at the screw hole.

The cylinder has a unique and patented anti-bump system which does not use trap pins. This system makes the turning of the cylinder key extra smooth.

Anti-drill pins are in each side of the cylinder.

Anti-pick pins are in each side of the cylinder making it extremely difficult for a common burglar to pick the cylinder.

Please note we do not recommend using three star cylinders on doors fitted with pull handles. We do howver recommend using one star cylinders with a cylinder guard on doors fitted with pull handles.
